I had been living in Sydney for about a year and I hadn't found much pool action. But one day at work I met someone froma rival web agency who invited me to play for his pool team. I went along on the Monday night only to discover that they had a full team and I wasn't needed. A few months later I got a call asking me if I still wanted to play as the team was struggling to qualify.
I decided to give it another try and I won all of my five games that first week. It seemed that there might be a pool scene in Sydney after all!
I averaged about 4 wins per week over the remainder of the season and my team, "The Jizz" managed to qualify for the finals. The finals where to be held at the Bald Faced Stagin Leichardt and the Family Inn in Ryde. There was about 16 teams in the finals which where played over two days double elimination. The prize was a trip to play in the BCA National Tournament in Las Vegas for all the team (slightly better than the plastic trophy that I was used to in the UK!).
We had a good team, James hardy, Alex Render, Daniel Mahgey, Dermot, Pat Farrel and Myself. On the first day in Leichardt I managed to play really well and pulled out a few 10:0 wins to put us into the final day undefeated.
On the second day we started really well thrashing a good team easily with almost all of us winning most of our games 10:0 with clearences. We made the final undefeated which meant we would have to lose twice to avoid the trip to Vegas! We where playing Grumpy's 8 and it looked like we would win the first game to take the prize. However Dermot missed a couple of balls which meant we would have to play again. We won the second match quite comfortably with Daniel and I potting the final balls for victory!
I couldn't belive it, in my first year back playing I had won a trip to play in the BCA national finals in the Riviera hotel in Las Vegas, a dream come true! All we had to do now was wait almost a year to go!
