- 12 April 2004
This event was a NSW ranking event held in the Bald Face Stag in Leichardt, Sydney. There where more than 64 runners and the event was run over two days, Saturday the 10th and Monday the 12th of April. I had't played much pool but I decided to go along and try not to get bored like I usually do with the endless waiting. I played really well in patches and was lucky enough to get to the final.
In the first round I beat one of the asian guys 5:1.
I next played a pommie guy and potted out the first four games first visit. The guy looked a little shocked as he was 4:0 down and he had only broken twice. I snookered myself on the my last ball in the 4th frame and his wife shouted good shot which pissed me off a little. My last ball was over the middle pocket but the natural angle to come of the cushion was blocked. I swerved the white into the cushion and came across the table to pot my ball. This left a really thinkg snick on the black which I smahed in. In the 5th frame I had a chance for the white wash and five finishes which I had never done from memory and i had a good chance. Unfortunately I had to play a cannon to free up a ball but it rattled and didn'd drop. I managed to win the frame anyway which put me in the last 16 and meant I had to come back on Easter Monday.
My first game on Monday was against Steve Woods, a very good player from Canberra who mainly plays two shot 8 ball on UK tables. I was playing well and pulled off some good finsihes to go 3:0 up. Again, my oponent looked a little shocked as he had only had one shot and was 3:0 down. This meant I had finsihed 7 out of the last 8 frames first visit and would have been 8 in a row if I hadn't rattled that cannon! But to Steve's credit he then started to play really well and pulled off some great shots to go 4:3 in front! I managed to level under pressure and level the match. In the final frame Steve had a half chance and missed a ball which left me a tough finish. I had one ball tied up on the cushion which I tried to move straight away. Unfortunately I was left with a ugly cut back into a very tight blind middle pocket with all the balls on for both of us. I decided to go for it anyway and it dropped in and I went on to clear the table.
In the Quater finals I had to play George the number three seed. I started off badly and George had a few chances to get out in front but he also missed a few easy balls. At 3:2 down I got my act together and made three good finishes potting some long pressure blacks to win 5:3.
In the semi final I had to play Steve Abdul, the number four seed. Again I started badly and went behind 3:2 even though I didn't miss many shots. Again I managed to start concentrating again and managed to win 5:3.
In the final I had to play Shaun Budd, the number one ranked player and probably the best player I have seen in Australia. I went 1:0 up thanks to a miss by Shaun and then missed an easy ball myself to go 2:0 up. We both continued to miss easy shots and I missed 4 easy balls in the next four frames to go 4:2 down. I pulled off a good finishe to make it 4:3 and then missed a good chance in the last to tie the match. I lost 5:3 but all in all it was a good couple of days. I relaxed a bit in the final as I usauly do, it was only when i got home that I realised I was effectively playing for $400 - doh!
