SIMMple Travels - 16 October 2005
I first took a mobile phone abroad in 1997. It was my amazing Sony Z1 and I used it to roam Thailand with great success. Mobile phones where still quite a new technology at the time, especially in Asia. But remarkably I was even able to use my mobile in the remote villages in north Thailand with few problems.
One of the funniest things that I remember was when my phone ran one evening while I was in Pattaya. It was one of my friends that didn't know I was out of the country asking me if I wanted to go to a party in England!
Although calling internationally while roaming was very expensive it was only about 20p per minute for local calls.
Nowadays though I find that the best solution is to get a tri-band phone and simply buy a SIMM card locally in the country you are visiting. Obviously this means your number will change but in Asia especially it is extreemly cheap.
I now find myself travelling around with a little bag of SIMM cards, 7 at the last count!
